Indian Attar: A Complete Guide to India's Traditional Perfume Oils

Indian Attar: A Complete Guide to India's Traditional Perfume Oils

The Indian people have used perfume in the most basic form since the beginning of time: one drop of Attar on the wrist or behind the ear. The Indian Attar is a natural oil without any alcohol base and with an aroma that remains closer to the skin and releases gradually throughout the day. Here at Meena Perfumery, we use Attar daily in our trade. The following guide is about Attar.

What Is Indian Attar?

Indian attar, also spelled ittar, is a concentrated perfume oil distilled from flowers, woods, herbs, or spices. Instead of alcohol, the distilled scent is collected in a base oil, usually sandalwood.

The result is a rich fragrance that lasts for hours. The tradition is closely tied to Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh, which is called the perfume capital of India.

How Is Indian Attar Made?

Makers follow the deg-bhapka method, a slow and patient process:

  • Fresh flowers or woods are placed in a copper pot with water.

  • The pot is heated over a wood fire, and the steam travels through a bamboo pipe.

  • The steam condenses in a vessel kept in a cool water bath.

  • The distillate is collected in sandalwood oil and rested for weeks so the scent can mature.

Every batch is small, so no two batches smell exactly alike.

Popular Types Of Indian Attar:

Rose attar: sweet and delicate.

Chandan attar: popularly known as sandalwood attar, creamy, warm and soothing.

Mitti attar: the aroma of the first shower of rain on dry soil.

Kewra attar: light and fresh fragrance with slight fruitiness.

Shamama: combination of aromatic herbs, woods and spices, suitable to be used in winter.

Indian Attar vs Arabic Attars:

Arabic attars usually revolve around oud, amber, and musk, which gives them a deep and smoky character. Indian attar leans toward florals, earthy notes, and sandalwood. Both are alcohol-free oils, and the two styles meet in agarwood products, since Indian distillers also work with agarwood. Many collectors keep both styles and choose by mood and season.

Attar Ingredients:

  • Essential oils: derived via the process of steam distillation, they form the essence of any scent.

  • Carrier oils: sandalwood or other light base oils dilute the scent and carry it safely on the skin.

  • Absolute oils: derived from delicate flowers such as jasmine that cannot withstand steam distillation.

  • Floral waters: a by-product of distillation, such as rose water, used for a light fragrance and skin care.

  • Pure saffron: valued in traditional blends for its warm, golden note.

How To Choose A Reliable Indian Attar Manufacturer?

A reliable Indian attar producer will always be transparent regarding the production process. Check out the following traits:

  • A clear ingredient list with no synthetic fillers.

  • Honest details about the distillation method and the base oil.

  • Sourcing information for flowers, woods, and spices.

  • Glass bottles that protect the oil from air and light.

  • Clear answers when you ask about batch and origin.

How To Wear Attar?

  • Dab a small drop on pulse points such as the wrists and neck.

  • Do not rub the skin, as this can break down the top notes.

  • Apply after bathing, when the skin is clean and warm.

  • Keep the bottle closed and away from heat and sunlight.

Frequently Asked Questions(FAQs):

1. What is the make-up of Indian Attars?

These oils are made from natural substances such as flowers, wood, and herbs that are extracted and mixed with either sandalwood or other carrier oils.

2. Is Indian attar free from alcohol content?

Yes. Traditional attar does not contain alcohol, which makes it very gentle on the skin.

3. How long does attar last on the skin?

A single drop usually stays for 6 to 12 hours, depending on the type, your skin, and the weather.

4. Is chandan attar the same as sandalwood attar?

Yes. The word “chandan” means sandalwood in the Hindi language. So, both names denote the same scent.

5. How do Arabic attars differ from Indian attar?

The main notes that Arabic attars contain are oud, amber, and musk, whereas Indian attar emphasizes florals, earthy notes, and sandalwood.
